 2006: A Golden Year in Review

Awards

  • Received resolutions from Governor Fletcher, Kentucky Senate, Kentucky House, Boone, Campbell & Kenton Co. Fiscal Courts and HBA of Kentucky in recognition of 50 years of service to the region.
  • Recognized by the National Housing Endowment with a grant for hosting of the state's first-ever African American Construction Trades Training Program.
  • Generated largest number of new members in the HBA's 50 year history with 200. Membership now exceeds 1,270 companies, with an annual retention rate in excess of 85 percent.

 

Administration

  • Implementation of new membership database system, BuilderFusion, which will allow the association greater operational efficiencies.
  • Erected new association headquarters monument sign and LED message center.
  • Completed comprehensive association financial audit and revamping of operational budget process.
  • Completed request for proposals process for organization's accounting, banking and legal services.
  • Developed new logos for HBA, Home Products Expo?, HomeFest? and Tour of Remodeled Homes?.

Public Policy

  • Provided written recommendations and testimony on revisions to the Sanitation District's proposed sanitation line reservation policy.
  • Provided written comments and testimony on amendments to the Elements of the Boone Co. Comprehensive Plan including housing, environment, transportation and land use.
  • Successful in efforts to amend several provisions of the state building code including issues related to brick ties and dryer vents.
  • Supported efforts in the General Assembly to curb small business health care costs (HB278).
  • Defeated efforts in General Assembly (HB423) to implement development impact fees.
  • Supported passage of legislation (S214) in the General Assembly which will allow the state operate the federal 404 permit program.
  • Assisted Boone Co. and Kenton Co. Planning Commissions with review and updates to subdivision regulations.
  • Met with Senators McConnell and Bunning, as well as Rep. Davis in April, in Washington, to discuss federal housing-related issues.
  • Changed name and scope of Issues Advocacy Committee to State & Local Government Committee.
  • Publication of General Assembly Update.

Government Relations

  • Hosted local meetings Secretary of KY Dept. of Labor regarding new OSH job site fall protection requirements.
  • Hosted Impact Fees Workshop, in cooperation with NAHB.
  • Sponsored Planning Officials Forum, attended by over 25 area planning commission members.
  • Scheduled informational sessions with Congressman Davis, local building inspectors, city managers, planning commission administrators, judge-executives, sanitation and utility officials.
  • Governor Ernie Fletcher served as guest speaker at the HBA's 50th Anniversary celebration in January, first such appearance by the state's top official at an HBA function.
  • Hosted 2005 Legislative Forum in January with Northern Kentucky Caucus.
  • Hosted a local Public Officials Luncheon in May during CiTiFEST? with over 60 local officials attending.

Member Promotions

  • Fielded numerous referrals from the public on builders and remodelers and construction suppliers.
  • Publication of HBA Who's Who Membership Directory.
  • Publication of monthly Northern Kentucky Builder magazine.
  • Publication of new monthly online newsletter, HBA Happenings.
  • Generated numerous member promotions and feature articles on the industry through Design magazine, Cincinnati Enquirer, Kentucky Post, Community Press, Real Estate Broker Magazine, Cincinnati Business Courier, Insight Cable and area TV media.
  • Produced 6th season and 100th episode of MY New Kentucky Homes Show on Insight Cable.
  • Improved member search capabilities and the look and feel of the HBA web site at www.hbanky.com.
  • Made numerous visits to area high schools, elementary schools and area vocational schools to advocate employment opportunities in construction trades.
  • Participated in first-ever Kentucky Construction Trades Fair held in Shelbyville, attended by hundreds of high school students, in September.
  • Made presentation to Northern Kentucky Youth Build Program on construction careers.

Home Shows

  • Held profitable Home Products Expo in January.
  • Hosted association's third CiTiFEST? in Newport in May.
  • Hosted Tour of Remodeled Homes with 11 participants---largest number of projects to date.
  • Hosted largest Cavalcade of Homes show in the organization's history with 55 homes.
  • Hosted first-ever Verona HomeFest? in August.
    Special Events
  • Held annual joint meeting with the Cincinnati HBA featuring ESPN NFL analyst and sports writer, Saul Paolantonio.
  • Held 42nd HBA golf outing in June with over 500 participants.
  • Other events included Inaugural Ball, Table Top Night, Florence Freedom Outing, Clambake, 2 Home Show Preview Parties, Keeneland Outing, Elections Night/ Roast and Holiday Party.
  • Sales & Marketing Council (SMC) Awards Banquet in October recognized top producers. Two SAM Tram new home tours were also sponsored.
  • SMC sponsored successful "Movers & Shakers on the Miracle Mile" program in April, with over 500 in attendance. 

Professional Development

  • Held second regional Latino training 20-week program in carpentry. A total of 27 students have completed the program to date.
  • Sponsored first-ever, 16-week, African American Construction Trades Training Program in October.
  • Hosted over 30 Residential Construction Site Safety Training sessions.
  • Made several amendments to the Registered Builder/Remodeler Program requirements in November. Revised HVAC requirements in Performance Standards Manual.
  • Updated 4 of HBA's standard Registered Builder/Registered Remodeler contracts to address new construction-related legal issues.
  • Sponsored numerous professional development programs on various aspects of the construction process, legal, marketing, management and other topics.
  • Registered nearly 200 students in the HBA's Evening Trades Program, which provides training courses in carpentry, electricity and HVAC.
  • Hosted 12 "How to Get the Most from Your Membership" orientation luncheons.

Community Involvement

  • Over $30,000 in cash contributions, $50,000 in supplies and $75,000 in donated labor has been committed to date for construction of the HBA's 50th Anniversary Devou Park Memorial Gardens.
  • Raised over $6000 in in-kind contributions, in cooperation with Goodwill Industries, for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
  • Spearheaded a food drive for the needy during the holiday season.
  • Provided toys for Steinford Foundation Christmas drive.
  • Provided funds for Erlanger's Christmas Shop with a Cop Program.
  • Women's Council continued their regional charitable works with a $4000 contribution to the Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky Meals on Wheels Program; contributions to the Dinsmore Educational Fund and Boone Co. 4-H Club; Adopt a Family for Christmas Program; Meals for Star Program and other worthy causes.
  • HBA Evening Trades Program received 14 scholarships for needy construction trades students provided by the Women's Council and Associates Council. A $500 scholarship was also provided to a UK student in architecture.
  • A total of 500 trees were distributed to area elementary schools through the Women's Council's Trees for Kids Program.
  • A $5,000 contribution was made to the Make a Wish Foundation by the Sales & Marketing Council through fundraising events.
  • Registered Remodelers continued to provide for the needy and disadvantaged in the community by building a handicap accessible bathroom for a severely disabled girl in Ft. Wright and another in Bellevue.
